The Labrador Retriever is well known as a great hunting dog for both upland game and waterfowl. Some have been bred to bring out their pointing instinct, as I have depicted in this carving. The beautiful grains of the walnut add to this sculpture as they flow from nose to tail. I hand carved this Chocolate Lab from a single piece of walnut live edge slab using a Dremel power tool. He measures 22″ x 10″ x 1 1/2″. It has a wall hanging bracket on the back. After hours of carving and sanding, I applied many coats of Deft Semi-gloss lacquer bringing out the various grains within the wood. I prefer using Walnut as my go to material for carving as it has stable characteristics and finishes out very nice. It’s rich natural color fits in well with most all decorating schemes and colors.
